Buzz Off, Fruit Flies: Easy Ways to Clear the Air

Fruit flies are tiny, troublesome and can be quite frustrating. They seem to appear out of nowhere, turning your fresh fruit bowl into their own personal buffet. But fear not, you can reclaim your space from these unwelcome visitors with little a bit of know-how and a few items from your cupboard. Here’s how to banish fruit flies from your home using methods that are both effective and environmentally friendly.

Clean Up Your Space

Fruit flies are attracted to ripe and rotting fruits and vegetables, so the first step in evicting them is to clean up your kitchen.

Start by throwing away overripe produce. Disposing of any rotting fruits and vegetables deprives fruit flies of their favorite food source.

Cleaning your countertops and appliances with a mixture of vinegar and water will remove any lingering fruit fly eggs and sticky residues.

Emptying your trash regularly and wiping down the bin removes one more safe harbor. Fruit flies love to breed in garbage, so keeping your trash clean and covered is crucial.

Set Up Natural Traps

Creating simple traps can help you catch and kill fruit flies without resorting to harmful chemicals. Here are a few DIY options:

Apple Cider Vinegar Trap: Pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar into a bowl and add a few drops of dish soap. The vinegar attracts the flies, and the dish soap breaks the surface tension, causing them to drown. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it to let the flies enter.

Red Wine Trap: Pour a bit of red wine into a small bowl. Like apple cider vinegar, the aroma will attract the flies. Add a few drops of dish soap to ensure they don’t escape once they land.

Fruit Trap: Place a piece of overripe fruit in a jar and cover it with plastic wrap. Poke a few small holes in the wrap to let the flies in, but not out.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils not only smell great but can also help keep fruit flies at bay. Some effective oils include:

Lavender Oil: Fruit flies dislike the strong scent of lavender. Place a few drops on a cotton ball and leave it near your fruit bowl or in other areas where fruit flies are prevalent.

Peppermint Oil: Known for its invigorating scent, peppermint oil can deter fruit flies. Mix a few drops with water in a spray bottle and use it to mist areas where flies tend to gather.

How to Prevent Future Infestations

Once you’ve tackled the current fruit fly problem, taking steps to prevent future invasions is essential.

Store Fruit Properly. Keep ripe fruits in the refrigerator or in sealed containers. This limits the flies’ access to their preferred food source.

Regularly Clean Your Sink and Drains. Fruit flies are known to breed in drains. Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down your sink once a week to keep things clean.

Seal Entry Points. Ensure that windows and doors are well-sealed and consider installing screens to keep flies out.
