Whether you’re out frolicking on the beach or spending the day hiking through a national park, avoiding a summer burn should be of the highest priority. No one wants to deal with a painful sunburn on vacation, or ever, but perhaps more importantly, the lasting damage to your skin and potential risks of sun exposure is real.
When it comes to sun protection, applying sunscreen properly is just as important as choosing the right SPF. Incorrect application can leave your skin vulnerable to harmful UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Here’s the right way to apply sunblock to ensure maximum protection:
1. Choose the Right Sunscreen
Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The bottle should indicate that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Water-resistant formulas are ideal for outdoor activities and swimming.
2. Apply Generously
Most people use too little sunscreen. A general rule is about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover your entire body, though some adults may need more. For your face alone, use about a nickel-sized amount.
3. Apply 15-30 Minutes Before Sun Exposure
Sunscreen needs time to absorb and form a protective barrier, so apply it at least 15 minutes before heading outside.
4. Don’t Miss Key Areas
Commonly missed spots include ears, neck, tops of feet, and the back of hands. When I’m helping my kids apply their sunblock, I always go a little underneath their bathing suit line as well. Suits can shift around as they play, leaving skin exposed to the sun’s rays. And since I’m a kid at heart, especially on the beach, I do this for myself as well.
Apply lip balm with SPF for additional protection, and don’t forget about your scalp. There are scalp and hair specific sunscreens available, and wearing a hat for added protection is always a good idea.

5. Reapply Regularly
Reapply every two hours, or sooner if swimming or sweating. Even water-resistant sunscreens need reapplication after extended exposure.
6. Use in All Weather
UV rays can penetrate through clouds and reflect off of snow, so sunscreen is essential year-round.
7. Applying Spray Sunscreen Correctly
Spray sunscreens are convenient, but they also need to be applied properly for full effectiveness. Here’s how:
- Apply in a Well-Ventilated Area: Avoid spraying indoors to avoid inhalation, or in windy conditions, which can prevent even application.
- Hold the Bottle About Six Inches from Skin: Spray evenly until the skin glistens.
- Rub It In: Many people skip this step, but rubbing the sunscreen into the skin ensures full coverage and prevents patchy protection.
- Avoid Spraying Directly on Face: Spray onto your hands first and then apply to your face.
- Reapply Frequently: Just like lotion sunscreen, spray sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
By following these steps, you’ll effectively shield your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Stay safe and sun-smart!
