How to Prepare, For when the Storm is Coming

When you learn of an impending hurricane, getting yourself and your home ready involves a combination of proactive steps and thoughtful planning. Don’t wait until the storm is on your doorstep – the time is now to help ensure your safety and mitigate potential damage – be ready and be safe.

1. Stay Ahead of the Weather

Be Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest weather reports from reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center or your local news station. Signing up for emergency alerts on your phone ensures you’ll receive timely updates and crucial information.

Create an Emergency Plan: Map out your evacuation routes and designate a safe meeting spot for your family. Having a clear communication plan helps everyone stay connected and informed during the storm.

2. Prepare Your Home for the Elements

Secure Your Windows and Doors: Ahead of the storm, close shutters or board up windows and doors with sturdy plywood. This simple step can protect your home from flying debris and reduce the risk of window breakage.

Check Your Roof and Gutters: Inspect your roof for loose shingles and make necessary repairs. Clean out gutters to prevent water buildup and reduce the chance of leaks.

Tidy Up Outdoor Areas: Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, grills and any other items that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Clear away any yard debris that might pose a risk.

3. Stock Up on Essential Supplies

Water and Food: Aim to store at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days. Similarly, stock up on non-perishable foods like canned goods, dry snacks and other essentials to keep you well-fed and hydrated.

First Aid Kit: Assemble a first aid kit with basic medical supplies and any necessary medications.

Lighting and Power: Equip yourself with flashlights and extra batteries. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio is also a great tool to stay informed if power outages occur.

4. Organize Personal and Important Items

Keep Documents Safe: Store important documents such as IDs, insurance papers and medical records in a waterproof container. This will help protect them from water damage and keep them easily accessible.

Prepare Cash: Having some cash on hand can be useful, especially if ATMs or card machines are out of service during or after the storm.

Document Valuables: Take photos or videos of your home and belongings. This visual record could become invaluable should it become necessary to work with an insurance provider.

5. Vehicle Readiness

Fuel Up: Make sure your vehicle has a full tank/charge. Gas stations may be closed or out of service during a hurricane, so it’s best to prepare ahead of time.

Emergency Car Kit: Pack an emergency kit for your car, including water, snacks, a flashlight, and a basic first aid kit.

6. Take Care of Your Pets

Pet Supplies: Ensure you have enough food, water, and medications for your pets. Don’t forget to pack a carrier or leash for their safety should evacuation become required.

7. Communicate with Neighbors

Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Identify elderly or disabled neighbors who might need extra help preparing for the hurricane.

Coordinate with Neighbors: Share your emergency plan and offer to help those who may need additional assistance. Working together can strengthen community preparedness.
