Sleep Spray – The What, Why & How

On the nightstand next to the bed in our hotel room stood a sleek little bottle. A treat to their guests. It was sleep spray- a scented concoction meant to mist one’s pillow before going to bed, providing a soothing aromatherapy to calm and relax.

On the way out, my daughter popped it into her bag, exclaiming we HAD to take it home for her brother. She knew he would be thrilled.

I can’t say exactly how my son had become introduced to – and then enamored with – sleep spray, but he’s been making his own and using it every night ever since he was about 9. Over the years, for birthdays and Christmases, he’s amassed quite a collection of essential oils, which as if an alchemist, he mixes in differing quantities with a bit of water to create unique scents. He enjoyed this gift from his sister, testing out the new formula and gaining further inspiration for his next batch..

Using sleep spray is a ritual that can invoke a sense of peace and relaxation leading up to bedtime. It really is very simple to make your own, requiring very little effort and a few supplies. You might begin with one scent, and layer in more over time to create your own signature blend.

Items you’ll need:

1. Small spray bottle, either glass or plastic

2. At least one small bottle of essential oil, such as lavender

3. Water

Instructions:

Place a few drops of the oil into the bottle. Fill with water, replace the top and give it a shake. Spray into the air and smell – if you’d like a stronger scent, add another few drops of the oil until you get the strength you’re after. Before bedtime, spray lightly onto your pillow.

A collection of essential oils with a spray bottle also makes a great gift for someone you know who would love to indulge in a bit of relaxation and aromatherapy before bed. Many grocery stores, health food stores and beauty stores carry essential oils, and they can also easily be ordered online.
