Time for a Speed Clean – 20 Minutes to Guest-Ready

The “OMW” text comes in.
You look around.
Your house looks… lived in.
Don’t worry, you’ve got this. It’s time for a speed clean.

Here’s your no-panic, no-frills, 20-minute countdown strategy to make your space look clean enough that no one suspects you’ve only just vacuumed around the pile of laundry.

Minute 20–18:
Grab a Laundry Basket + Do a Sweep

This is your “hide everything that doesn’t belong” blitz. Go room to room with a laundry basket and toss in:

  • Rogue socks, charging cables, half-read books
  • Yesterday’s mug collection
  • Toys, mail, and that one slipper (just one, of course)

Once the basket’s full, stash it in a closet, laundry room, under the bed — wherever. This is triage, not a deep clean.

Minute 17–15:
Couch + Coffee Table Reset

Fluff the cushions. Fold the throw blanket. Stack the remotes.

Then hit the coffee table:

  • Wipe off crumbs
  • Stack magazines or books like you did it on purpose
  • Remove anything sticky, suspicious, or personal (that random nail file? Bye)

Minute 14–12:
Kitchen Surface Wipe-Down

You’re not doing dishes — you’re hiding them.
Load what you can into the dishwasher or neatly stack them in the sink.

Spray and wipe counters.
Push crumbs into the sink like a pro.
Put away whatever’s out that screams snack therapy (looking at you, half-eaten bag of chips).

Minute 11–9:
Bathroom Dash

This is the one room they’re guaranteed to visit. Make it look semi-respectable:

  • Wipe the mirror and sink (one cloth, one spray, two minutes — GO)
  • Quick swipe of the toilet seat and rim
  • Replace the hand towel with a clean one
  • Light a candle or spritz something that says “spa” not “panic”

Minute 8–6:
Entryway or First-Glance Zone

Wherever your guests enter — that’s your stage.

  • Straighten shoes or shove them out of sight
  • Hang jackets or corral them in one spot
  • Wipe visible dirt off floors or do a lightning-fast sweep, if needed

They’ll remember what they see first. Give them a highlight reel, not the director’s cut.

Minute 5–3:
Trash + Smell Check

Empty the obvious trash (bathroom bin, kitchen bag).
If it smells questionable, take it outside.

Then:

Make it smell homey.

  • Light a candle
  • Open a window
  • Bake off a cookie if you’re extra : )

Minute 2–0:
Lights, Music, Action

  • Dim the lights, mood lighting hides dust.
  • Start a playlist. Nothing too intense — think “effortless cool,” not club at 2 a.m.
  • Take a deep breath, sip some water, look calm.

Your place may not be clean-clean, but it’ll look put-together, smell fine, and feel inviting. And honestly? That’s all most guests care about.

Now go open that door like you always live this way.
